The Bansuri (Indian Bamboo Flute)

The Bansuri is a side blown flute originating from the Indian subcontinent. It is produced from bamboo and is an arephone. Referred to as nadi and tunava in the Rigveda and other Vedic texts of Hinduism, it is very popular in Indian classical music. Its importance, qualities and uses are discussed in the Sanskrit text Natya Shastra.

This unassuming bamboo flute can produce the sweetest sounds which takes us back to our childhood days, running around our Grandfather’s workshop. Our Grandmother would tell us stories of the magical flute of Lord Krishna and how he could make the world dance to his heavenly instrument. We have been blessed to have heard the best play and are always encouraged when we see new blood pick up this gentle instrument.
