The Bhangra Dhol
The Bhangra Dhol is the largest in a group of double headed drums used in the Indian subcontinent with regional variants. Widely used throughout northern areas, especially the Punjab, its purpose is to make noise.
This drum is the symbol of celebration. We cannot imagine a wedding without one. The soul of this instrument is hearty, bold, imaginative, brave and joyous…the beat stirs the blood…makes fast the heartbeat and is the Pied Piper of your feet. Even the non-dancer has no control when this majestic drum starts its play. We have been blessed to hear Dhol players in our shop … the Dhol Foundation & Johnny Kalsi have introduced the Dhol to many generational players.
We still feel the sacred within its beat. It is primeval in the longing it stirs within the soul. We have heard the Dhol players say they feel as one when they play, and we have seen this oneness when we listen and watch …this is where your soul partners your heart and dance.
