The Dholak (Dholki)

These double headed drums are generally known as folk instruments. They do not have the precision of say a Tabla and their sound depends on the size of the heads. The rassi (rope) are usually interspaced with steel rings which are pulled to tighten the drumheads. Earlier versions used pegs which were twisted to do the tightening. Today, you can purchase a Dholak with rassi, nut & bolts and a combination of both.

When we were children, it was always known that the parties our parents gave would end in a sing song and dance with our Dholki. The memories of this still make us smile and we reminisce often. Over the years this drum has sung the story of our lives.
